It’s been a rough week for Two Strike Noise. Bad news regarding the future of the Oakland A’s has brought the show down but we shall persist! We’ve got some numbers regarding the A’s and relocation as well as their pitch staff (or guys on the mound trying to pitch?). Happy Opening Week to those who celebrate. Alot of historic firsts this past week with new rules and big performances. We hear from some of our favorite players on the rule changes and some familiar names with new jobs this year. We get political about MLB blackouts, and ofcourse we check in with our boy Lars Nootbaar and see what condiments he’s going to be rocking in the MLB this season. As we edge closer to Opening Day, we scratch that baseball itch for you this week as we discuss MLB putting the hammer down on batboys and girls, Lars Nootbaar-mania continues to run wild now in Japanese arcades, a minor league team choosing an alternate nickname we can kind of get behind and a bunch of great debuts. Our main topic this week is somebody who was granted immediate 2SN patron sainthood status, Jay Johnstone. This southern California kid went on to have a pretty good career on the field but his antics off of it are what let him ascend to the hallowed halls so quickly. With a great sense of humor and an easy target in Tommy Lasorda, Johnstone made his teammates, opponents and everybody else laugh equally after his playing days were over. Opening Day is lurking and we’re getting ready as we continue to enjoy the World Baseball Classic and some incredible games. We also appropriately discuss some of Elston Howard’s contributions to the game, Japan cracking down on cracking pepper and the spring Koshien tournament is in full swing in Japan, and we have our first set of debuts for the season.In our main segment we look at the history of catcher’s equipment, what started out as something that was ridiculed by both players and fans, turned into some unique attempts at, you know, not dying on the field. We’re back at it again with pitchers and catchers already in camp. We decide which caps are best suited for this years Hall of Fame class to be represented on their busts, remember some heroic feats by players in uniforms where players actually saved fans from danger and we check up one on disgruntled listener. In our main story this week we learn about baseball’s very first All-Star game which took place at the Fashion Race Course, a horse track the saw a best of three series between New York’s finest baseballers of the day.
